For younger students, you might do one number/lesson per session; for older students, you may want to do 2 numbers per session.
Objectives:
Identify sets of zero
Learn the written symbol
Match the written numeral to sets of zero (no writing)
Write the number zero
Match the written numeral to sets of zero (written)
1. Identify sets of zero
Give student one of the following:
Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets -Zero
Leave the spaces/jar empty and ask, how many (elephants, pieces of candy, etc are in the jar/space (If student says none, say right, zero whatevers are in the jar/space).
Continue this several times making sure to emphasize the term zero.
2. Introduce the written symbol.
Give student Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets -Zero sheet.
Show student the zero numeral.
Say this is the number zero.
Have student repeat after you, zero. With your index finger, trace the number zero, then have student do the same while saying zero. You could also use sandpaper numbers or trace in sand, flour, rice.
Zero hunt. Have student go around the room, look in books for the number 0. You can use store receipts, math books, magazines, etc. If student picks an o instead of a zero, point out that the o is a letter and that it is more like a circle, zero is shaped like an oval or stretched out circle.
Optional ideals: Give student an outline zero and let student color in or glue glitter, macaroni, etc onto it.
3. Match the written numeral to sets of zero (no writing)
On the TJ's Set Building Mat, place different amounts of objects in the spaces, leaving a few empty. Have student select the zero number cards (you may want to make/print 3 of each numeral numeral card) and place it under the appropriate space(s) (ones that have zero objects).
Continue this drill several times. You might even want to use real jars, plates, containers to put objects in.
From time to time, throughout the day, ask student how many elephants are in the room, and other things (some silly) for which the answer is zero.
3. Write the number zero
Give student: Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets -Zero
Again, with your finger, trace the numeral.
Have student trace the number with his finger, several times. You may also want to use flour, sand, rice to have student trace in.
Give student Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets
and show student the bottom of sheet where it shows how to form the number zero. Model how to write it correctly and watch as student traces the first line. Make sure he traces in correct direction.
Let student try writing the number on his own in the next row, but be sure to watch to make sure he is writing in the correct direction. You might laminate this page so student can rewrite.
4. Match the written numeral to sets of zero (written)
Next, on the TJ's Set Building Mat, place different amounts of objects in the spaces, leaving a few empty. Have student write the number zero this time under the appropriate space(s) (ones that have zero objects). You may want to also laminate this for reuse.
