Lesson 3: Using an Addition Table
(Can be done at a later time in the day as well, just be sure to try to get this in a review is key.)
1. Review the math deck flashcard cards (see lesson 1 for explanation)
2. Give math facts drills (worksheet or orally). Here are some from TJ:
Sums to 5, Sums 6 to 10, Sums 11 to 15
3. Give a few word problems with sums to 18 for student to answer orally. Optional: Have student write the corresponding number sentences.
Show student a copy of an addition table.
Tell student that using an addition table can help him when he is stuck or help him check his work.
How do we use the table?
Let's suppose we wanted to find the sum of 4 + 5.
1. Find 4 on the left colored side of the table. Put your finger there.
2. Find 5 on the top colored part of the table. Put your finger there.
3. Bring your fingers together in straight lines (the top one coming down and the left one going right) until they meet. You should be on the 9 square. This is the answer. 4 +5 = 9.
Use your addition table to find the following sums:
First, answer the problem yourself, then see if you get the same answer.
3 + 5 4 + 6 2 + 4 8 + 2 9 + 6
Give more problems, if necessary.
Student will complete a worksheet of addition problems and then check his work with an addition table.
Generate an addition math worksheet from Soft Schools.com: (You can generate in PDF format). Be sure to set the total sum limit to 18. Give approximately 30 problems.
1. Student completes worksheet
2. After student completes the worksheet, have him check his work with the chart. You should supervise student to make sure that he is using the chart correctly.
Optional: Have student tell you the addends in the first row of problems. Have student point to the sum.
Encourage student to use the addition table if he is stuck on a problem or to check his work.
The addition table is not mandatory to use, so if student has trouble, no problem, go on to the next lesson in the next session. Try to still encourage and assist student in using the chart.
