Skip Counting

General Skip Counting Counting by 2s
Counting by 3s Counting by 4s
Counting by 5s Counting by 10s

TJ Tips for teaching/learning skip counting:

1. Work on one sequence (2s, 5s, 10s etc) at a time. Try starting with 10s, then 5s, then 2s.

2. Have student practice orally skip counting each day.

3. Have student write the numbers (multiples) in a sequence daily. You can have student copy the numbers from a chart or strip in the beginning until they have written them enough to know them from memory.

4. Children are sometimes able to skip rote count easily, but don't really understand the concept.  It is important to provide student with opportunity to count objects (especially real life) by 2s, 5s, 10s, etc.  (Examples: candy, toys, cereal, etc).

For beginners, you can lay down a number strip and have student groups of objects above/below the appropriate number. Make sure student is also orally counting as they do so.

5. Once student knows how to skip count starting with 2, 5, 10, etc, vary the beginning number. Example: Skip count by 5s, but start with the number 3.
