TJ's Family Rules Template.

I was once in a small homeschooling co-op and set up our disciplinary guidelines so that each teacher would be consistent in dealing with the kids, insha Allah and so that the kids could expect a consistent course of action for inappropriate behavior.

I thought that this might come in handy just in a general family setting.  I know that sometimes in the heat of the moment I make decisions based upon how I am feeling that moment and sometimes come up with disciplinary actions that don’t fit the nature of the situation as behavior “experts” suggest (make the “punishment/action” a natural consequence of the behavior).  So I am hoping that setting up appropriate courses of action, based upon the situation beforehand will help alleviate some of the fitnah that comes from hastily thrown out disciplinary measures in the heat of the moment and Allah knows best.  Insha Allah, applying a specific course of action, consistently, will prove more effective.  You can use TJ's Family Rules Template to set up your own family rules. It comes with 3 lists of behaviors (social/worship, property, and academic).  It has space for you to record your family's course of action/consequences as well as list ayaat or ahadith that you can refer to.

By coincidence, qadr Allah, the author of the above article mentions creating a document of this type as well. Be sure to take a peek to get some ideas of putting a family rules document into action.
