Teaching Modes of Writing:
There are basically four main modes of writing: and each mode can be
broken down into further categories.
Descriptive:
To describe
a person, place, thing or event. The write should paint a picture
with words for the reader.
Expository/explanatory:
To explain
or inform
Persuasive
To give an
opinion or persuade
Narrative
To describe
an event or events in a narrative (story) fashion
Some include
a fifth category, creative writing.
Tip: Always show student good (and bad) examples of the type
of assignment (i.e. letter, summary, etc) before having them
write.
