Homeschool Reading and Writing Curriculum for 6th - 8th Graders

I basically make most of our curriculum, relying heavily on materials from the internet. The following is a curriculum that I developed for my 11 and 14 year olds.

It is a work in progress.

The intent was to expose them to a variety of reading materials and to incorporate grammar and writing as well as other subjects into their reading "course." There are more or less four modes (reasons) for writing: Descriptive, Persuasive, Expository, Narrative) and I have attempted to schedule so that my students are exposed to all four types on a regular basis (some sources say a fifth, creative writing, but I tried to stay away from this as a lot of creative writing for children is fictional).   However, the narrative section may contain some fictional items, but I am working on finding non-fictional narratives.

Feel free to use the curriculum with your own reading materials.

I just ask that you do not publish to the web or reprint for other than your personal use without consent from TJ.

If you have homeschool students in these levels and would like to co-op (help find reading material to match the curriculum, make assignments, and have children share their work) you can email me.

The following types of activities will be woven into the assignments, insha Allah, as much as possible.

Language:

  • Grammar (use the reading material to learn/review grammar concepts)

  • Vocabulary (define vocabulary, examine word parts/concepts (synonyms, antonyms, homographs, homophones, affixes, roots)

  • Sentence writing (with vocabulary words, varying types of sentences, adding adverbs/adjectives to make writing interesting)

  • Question formulating (take reading material and take main points and formulate questions and then answer them in complete sentences).

  • Composition:   Summaries, reports, outlines, notes, essays, sentences, and creative writing assignments. A big component of each lesson will be for student to complete a writing assignment using the particular writing mode that was read.

  • Students may have to give an oral presentation from time to time.

Math

  • /Solving and creating problems based upon data or numbers given in the reading
  •   Interpretating data (chart, graphs, etc)

History:

  • As applicable. (timelines, causes of events); watch a related history video.

Islamic Studies:

  • Find ayaat/ahadith to go along with the reading; optional: read the tafsir of ayaat). Discuss the Islamic connection/position in regards to the article/reading.
