2nd Grade Grammar Review

The following is a list of topics generally covered in second grade grammar.

  I use these to provide quick frequent review sessions.

I put them in the form of questions and activities to move the sessions along.

What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that makes sense.

 

What mark do telling sentences/statements end with?

A period.

 

Give/write an example of a telling sentence

What mark do questions end with?

A question mark.

 

Give/write an example of a question.

What do all sentences begin with?

A capital letter.

 

Give student a scrambled sentence, ask student to put the words in order.

Answer will vary.

 

What is a command?

 

 

What type of end mark does a command sentence have?

 

 

Give/write an example of a command.

Answer will vary.

 

Give student three different types of sentences.  Ask student to identify each type of sentence (telling/asking/command)

 

 

Name the two parts of a sentence.

Naming part (subject) and action part  (predicate). Second graders are not generally given the terms subject and predicate yet.

 

Give student a sentence. Ask him/her what the naming part is.

Give student a sentence. Ask him/her what the action part is.

Answer will vary.

 

Give student a small list of nouns.  Have student categorize the nouns into two lists

i.e. if student is given  bird, dolphin, bee, fish, student sorts into the given categories of t things that fly and things that swim. Teacher can give the categories or have student come up with them on their own.

Give student a list of four words; three of them go together. Student picks out the word that does not belong.

Another option is to find worksheets on the web to practice this.

 

What are synonyms?

Words that mean about the same thing.

 

Give student one word at a time. Have student tell you a synonym for that word.

Examples: big, small, coat, road

Answers will vary.

 

What is a noun?

A noun is a person, place or thing.

 

Give me an example of:

a noun that is a place

a noun that is a person

a noun that is a thing

Answers will vary.

 

Give student a group of sentences. Have student pick out the nouns in each sentence.

 

 

What does the word singular mean?

What does the word plural mean?

Singular: one

Plural: more than one.

  How do we make most words plural? Add an "s" to the end.
  When do we make a word plural by adding "es" to the end? When the word ends in:
  • s
  • sh
  • ch
  • x
  Give student a list of nouns. Some ending in s, sh, ch, x and others that don't. Have student write the plural. Answer will vary.
  Give student the plural of several words. Have student tell you the singular form. Answer will vary.
  How do we make words that end in "y" plural? Drop the "y" and add "ies"
  Give student a list of nouns, some ending in "y" and some not. Have student write the plural. Answer will vary.
  How do we make a noun show that it is owned or belongs to someone? Add "  's" to the end
  Give student several nouns with something that is possessed.

 i.e.    dad____       pen

Have student fill in the blank to make the word show possession.
  What do the names of people begin with? a capital letter
  Give student the names of several people he/she knows or has heard of. Have student write each name correctly.  
 

What do the following titles mean?

  • Mr.

  • Mrs.

  • Miss

  • Ms.

  • Dr.

 

  • Mr. -- a man who is or is not married.

  • Mrs.--  a woman who is married.

  • Miss -- a woman who is not married/never has been married.

  • Ms. a divorced woman or we don't know if she is married or not.

  • Doctor

  Given the following titles orally, have student write the correct titles abbreviated.

Mister, Mrs., Miss, Ms., doctor

Mr.; Mrs.; Miss, Ms.; Dr.
 

What is an initial?

The first letter of a word (especially a person's name)

 

Given several names, including student's own, have student write the initials.

Answer will vary.

 

Give student a list of proper noun places, have student write them correctly.

i.e Lake Erie, Oak Street, Ohio, etc.

Answers will vary.

 

How many months are there?

Name/write  the 12 months. What do they begin with?

12. January, February, ......

capital letter.

 

How many days of the week are there?

Name/write the days of the week. What do they begin with?

7. Sunday, Monday.......

capital letter.
