Nullifiers of Wudhu (Thing that break your wudhu)
from: translation of “Al-Mabaadee al-Mufeedah fit-Tawheedi wal-Fiqhi wal-‘Aqeedah” [Basic Principles on the Subjects of Tawheed, Fiqh and ‘Aqeedah] by Shaikh Yahyaa bin ‘Alee Al-Hajooree, Translated by: Abu Maryam Isma’eel Alarcon available from www.al-ibaanah.com
and the "Prophet's Wudhoo Described" (PWD) by Fahd ibn 'Abdir Rahman ash-Shuwaib Translated by Daawood Burbank (.chm version from www.Fatwa-Online.com/downloads)
Vocabulary: You may want to define the following terms for students (or have them look up) before reading.
1. Whatever comes out from the front or back private part: The proof for this is the hadeeth of Abu Hurairah in which the Prophet said: “The prayer of one who has excreted is not accepted until he performs wudoo.”
(PWD): Abu Hurayrah (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhu) said: Rasoolullaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:
«Allaah does not accept the prayer of any one of you having committed hadath until he makes wudhoo.» [al-Bukhaaree (al-Fat.h, 1/206) and Muslim (no.245)].
an-Nawawee says in 'al-Majmoo' (2/3) as for that which comes out of the two private parts - then it breaks wudhoo according to Allaah Ta'aalas saying: {or one of you comes from offices of nature...}, [Soorah al-Maa.idah 5:7] along with his (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) saying: «There is no wudhoo except from a sound or a smell.» [Saheeh and has preceded (Saheeh ul Jaami' (7443)]. He adds: So that which comes out of the front or back part of a man or woman breaks the wudhoo - whether excretion or urine or wind - or a worm or pus or blood or stones or anything else and there is no difference in that for something which happens normally or rarely.
2/3. Deep sleep and Ritual Impurity: The proof for this is the hadeeth of Safwaan bin ‘Assaal in which he said: “The Messenger of Allaah ordered us when traveling not to remove our socks for three days and nights except for the case of Janaabah (ritual impurity). However, (we could do so) for feces, urine and sleep.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhee and it is a sound hadeeth]
The sleep of the prophets does not nullify their wudoo. This is due to the hadeeth of Anas bin Maalik reported by Al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh Collection where the Prophet said: “The prophets’ eyes sleep but not their hearts.” This is a special characteristic that applies to them alone.
PWD: 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhu) said: Rasoolullaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said: «The eye is the drawstring for the anus, so he who sleeps then let him make wudhoo.» [Abu Daawood (no.203), Ibn Maajah (no.477), Ahmad. Declared as Saheeh by al-Albaanee] In the hadeeth is an evidence that sleep does not in itself something that breaks wudhoo, however the Purification is broken if it is possible for something to come out from the anus - however if that is restricted, e.g. by sitting flat on the earth, then that is not the case. 4. Touching the private part: The proof for this is the hadeeth of Basrah bint Safwaan . who reported that the Prophet said: “Whoever touches his penis should not pray until he performs wudoo.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhee, and it is a sound (hasan) hadeeth] The hadeeth is authentic according to its supporting narrations found in Ahmad and others from the report of ‘Abdullaah bin ‘Amr in which the Prophet said: “Any man that touches his penis, must perform wudoo. And any woman that touches her vagina must perform wudoo.”
5. Eating the meat of camels: The proof for this is the hadeeth of Jaabir bin Samurah in which a man once came to the Messenger of Allaah and asked him: “Do I have to perform wudoo due to (eating) the meat of camels.” He said: “Yes.” [Reported by Muslim]
6. Apostasy: Apostating from the Religion nullifies one’s ablution (wudoo) as well as one’s Islaam. The proof for this is Allaah’s saying: “And whoever rejects Faith (Eemaan), then he has invalidated his (good) deeds.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah: 5]
7. The loss of mental capacity: This is either due to insanity, fainting, drunkenness or situations similar to this such as when one takes medications that cause him to lose his senses. The scholars have unanimously agreed that wudoo is nullified due to that.
That is the 'intellect' going away by any means because of insanity or fainting or intoxication - as in this condition he does not know whether his wudhoo is broken or not. This is the saying of the great majority of scholars. (Sharh Saheeh Muslim (4/74) and al-Mughnee (1/164)).
