Several years ago, while living in the Philadelphia area, we were able to visit the Greater Philadelphia Book bank. Masha Allah, I was able to get lots of free textbooks, it was truly a blessing. In hopes of others benefiting from book banks such as these, listed below are free Book Banks and Projects offering free books and textbooks.
JazakAllahu Kheyr to my buddy Umm Samyrah
for taking the time to research and provide most of the Book bank links.
I was told that as of 11/15/07 the book bank would be closed for good.
The Greater Philadelphia Book Bank is a volunteer organization that accepts donations of used books, which are then made available free of charge to Philadelphia teachers, school libraries, and to the general public.
The books include many thousands of textbooks, hardcovers, paperbacks, and reference books. Many of these books are suitable for summer reading programs and other special projects. Also available are audio-visual items and magazines such as National Geographic, Audubon, and Smithsonian.
The items are stored at the former Clemente Middle School at 5th and Luzerne Streets. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Book Bank is open only to teachers, librarians, and other school staff (with ID). On Thursdays, the Book Bank is open to the general public.
The Book Bank is open only during limited periods of the year, usually when public schools are in operation. For current hours and more information, call the Book Bank at 215-227-2570. To gain entry to the building, go to the corner entrance door. On the left side of the door, ring the doorbell distinctly three times.
